Biospheres and Technospheres

How do life, environment and technology reshape planetary dynamics? Which feedbacks produce regulation, and what evidence could support claims of planetary agency or organismal organization?

Planetary feedback and selection

  • Gaia hypothesis - Proposes that interactions between life and its planetary environment maintain conditions favorable to life. The proposed biosphere-level regulation is a hypothesis; coupled feedback alone does not establish it. Lovelock and Margulis 1974.
  • Daisyworld - Dark and light daisies alter temperature through albedo while temperature controls their growth. This model produces climate regulation over a range of solar inputs; it demonstrates a mechanism, not that Earth behaves identically. Watson and Lovelock 1983.
  • Selection and planetary regulation - Doolittle proposes selection through persistence of stabilizing processes. Hermida and Okasha challenge whether such persistence explains adaptation. The dispute concerns what selection must explain about planetary feedback. Doolittle 2017, Hermida and Okasha 2025.

Constructed ecosystems

  • Biosphere 2 oxygen loss - Oxygen fell from 21% to 14% over the first 16 months of enclosure. Soil respiration consumed oxygen while concrete absorbed the released carbon dioxide, masking the respiratory imbalance in atmospheric CO2. Severinghaus et al. 1994, Severinghaus 1995.

Technology and planetary organization

  • Technosphere - Treats interconnected technology as a planetary system with energy and material demands that constrain human action. A geological account of technological dependence and persistence, without presuming that the system is an organism. Haff 2014.
  • Planetary intelligence - Proposes collective knowledge coupled to planetary feedback as a framework for biospheres and technospheres. Distinguishes immature from mature systems through their contribution to long-term planetary functioning. Frank et al. 2022.

Open questions

  • Which feedbacks are stabilizing over which environmental ranges, and which arise through selection rather than incidental coupling?
  • What observations would distinguish planetary intelligence from distributed processes described metaphorically as intelligent?
